Migraine headaches are a common symptom that is seen in our office. Patients that have migraine headaches range from weekly occurrences to monthly to a few times a year. Some people are fortunate enough to know the triggers of their migraines, so that when something occurs they are able to stay ahead of the pain and reduce the symptoms. Unfortunately for others, they have no idea what causes the migraine to occur and can come out of nowhere.

Acupuncture is a great option for migraine suffers, because the side effects are slim to none and the results can be phenomenal. Acupuncture works by regulating the body's energy (also known as Qi). If you have an imbalance of Qi, you can experience a wide array of symptoms, including migraines.

In our office, we use a special diagnostic tool called an Acugraph. This is an instrument that measures the Qi in specific acupuncture points. These numbers will be converted into a graph, which allows us to know exactly how much energy is in each meridian and which points will help correct any imbalances. We retest at each visit, so we have the most accurate treatment for your body. There are also acupuncture points that help reduce any symptoms. So for a migraine patient, we can balance the body's energy with the points from the graph and then additional points to help reduce the symptoms of the migraine headache. With this combination, we can help the patient feel better faster and potentially decrease the number of times a migraine occurs.

Many patients report feeling relief within a few hours after an acupuncture session. In addition to decreased migraine symptoms, many say that they feel more relaxed and less stressed. Those sound like great potential side effects to me!
